[on a positive note]

Happy Monday!! This weekend thoughts of escaping and planing and plotting and  running away occupied much of my space. And in my heart of heart’s I know this is a VERY good thing. Entertaining one’s inner wanderlusts can often lead to some amazing things! There were also those other thoughts of opening new doors, walking through and continuing on a path I’d long abandoned simply because the mind does play tricks, and when you forget the way…you also tend to forget the why. But…

“I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art – write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can” – Neil Gaiman

Hello, Weekend!

How was your week? Mine ended on a rainy note; we’re talking serious downpour, yellow cabs splashing buckets of rain water on perfectly clean jeggings. But the in-between? Was oh, so sweet! I’m a paper junkie, stationary whore if you’re fancy, and had the chance to check out the latest collections from the fun folks over at Post It. My brain was on a continuous color warp for the better half of an hour, and I was in HEAVEN. Alas, this weekend will find me tearing through obnoxiously cute washi tape, and making lists. Tons of lists. A wee birdie told me it was finally Spring time, and this go-round, I finally believe ‘em. Here are a few links to get your weekend started…!

The Refutation of Good Hair

In her latest project, The Refutation of Good Hair, Nakeya B examines the idea of ‘good hair’ as consumption, comparable to plates of traditional African American cuisine. The idea? “The new visual interpretation criticizes the ideology that certain hair types are “good” which insinuates that hair types not fitting into that standard are less desirable and less beautiful. The series is a close examination of beauty, identity, and the Black womanhood in this current day and age.”

Hello, Weekend!

Last week was unexpected. In a good way. There were welcome Easter traditions to take part in; moments to reflect, power down & clear the mind for the welcoming of Spring. And surprisingly there was this. Good music haunts me when I hear it, and the voice of Gregory Porter lifted me up for the first time in quite a long time.  The first initial listen blew me away, so much so…I took to wiping a few tears. That good? Yes.  This weekend there’s hope lurking for even more new discoveries. Here are few links to get it all started…!

[On A Positive Note]

Happy Monday, All! Really can’t believe it’s the 1st of April already! This weekend we finally saw a few pops of sun, making enjoying the Easter holiday all the more sweet. This weekend me and a friend were able to make it back to our old brunch spot, and dive into some yummy South African dishes. If you live in Brooklyn or are simply visiting, a must treck is Madiba. Great food, amazing service and the vibe makes you want to savor your plate. Do you guys have a favorite brunch spot come the weekend?

Look out for a few new posts on the blog this week + a review of the new Eden Body Works Coconut Shea line. One of my rituals at the beginning of each month is to scour the internets for a cutesie desktop wallpaper to make the 9-5 more bearable. Love this one from Tabitha and this one from Jess.

Make it a good one….

Hello, Good Friday!

So this week forced me to face an often overlooked truth. I am by no means old enough nor young enough to ignore all that life has to offer. Meaning? We have no excuse to say no to much of our heart’s desire no matter our age, no matter the perceptions placed on our pretty little heads by society. Not even our loved onces can dictate when to stop agreeing to live life. And if you need a wake-up call to that fact, phone a friend. A good one. Best of the week? Y’all….Luke James is some kind of good stuff. Attending a Versus & Flow event left me and a friend pretty excited for his new album. I’m officially ready for new music! Here are a few links to get your weekend started….!

Stop Telling Women to Smile

Stop Telling Women to Smile is an exhibition of new works by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. An extension of her street art project of the same name, the show will include oil paintings, as well as photographs, drawings and prints. STWTS addresses gender based street harassment. The work was created to be placed in the street – placing the presence of strong women in that environment to combat mistreatment.

Reduce noise. Our lives are filled with all kinds of noise — visual clutter, notifications, social media, news, all the things we need to read. And truthfully, none of it is necessary. Reduce all these things and more, and create some space, some quiet, in your life.

Missed the memo on this, yessir! “Your Thirties are Do or Die

Are us thirtysomethings really invisible? Are we quietly hibernating, honing the best of ourselves while we get fit enough to fight? Is the thirties just the decades-long Rocky workout montage of your life? Where are the TV shows about people in their thirties stumbling on their way home from the parties to puke up that expensive pasta they were finally able to buy with their really good graphic design job? I don’t know about you, but making sure my mortgage gets paid has been full of cinematic suspense for years now.
