Hello, Weekend!

temi

This week I realized that this here space has been lacking in a few things; #1 being an update to my current natural hair faves list, which has seen it’s cycle of rotations this summer, & will most likely be shifting once more in the coming weeks. And another is simply more good vibes like those of Nigerian born singer Temi Dollface.  There really is so much to appreciate in this; the visuals + fashion + pop culture references….all love.

& on another note – Brooklyn welcomes back to several stages this weekend the Afro Punk Festival. A must visit because, well…it’s free (with RSVP), and the collective is simply there to celebrate music, art & community (oh….and FOOD!!).

sigh…summer’s almost over ain’t it? Make it count, lovelies!

You Should Meet: Studio Africa + Faarrow

faarrow

Meet sisters Siham & Iman, the newest addition to Studio Africa’s recent campaign collaboration with Deisel+EDUN. Somalian born, these two singer-songwriters also make up the awesome group Faarrow and are currently striving to empower women in their communities.

Studio Africa is a virtual loudspeaker for a new generation of creative talents from across the continent. The campaign features nine artists in fashion, film, music, literature, and photography; individuals with both talent and a deep commitment to their respective countries and people: Meet the catwalk model running a foundation for the education of orphaned girls in Tanzania; the actor creating opportunities for Senegal’s talibé beggar children; the fashion designer building an industry in Côte d’Ivoire one skilled worker at a time; the musician drawing on Belgian and Congolese roots to challenge what it means to make African music today; the writer from Morocco breaking taboos as the first openly gay author in the Arab world; and the photography collective showing their home-town of Soweto, South Africa in a whole new light. – via studioafrica.tumblr

Hello, Weekend!

sayyes

Friday’s are usually my chance to share with you guys all the cool, fun links and time wasters that I come across on the daily – but this week, a beautiful short film produced by director & writer Ava Duvernay stole my heart & thoughts. Ava’s work definitely has an ethereal spark to it that takes your breath away. Remember The Door?Simply stunning. Art like this keeps me encouraged.

Starring Kali Hawk, Lance (yummmmmmy) Gross, & a brief cameo by Issa Rae, this here is worth more than one look: “SAY YES explores the power of the affirmative, and the beauty that blossoms from embracing life. Inspired by the Fashion Fair lip color, Say Yes, Sundance award-winning filmmaker, Ava DuVernay created this vision of what happens when you welcome the unexpected.”

Hello, Weekend!

haircandy

There really was something distinct in the air yesterday as the calendar ticked to another first of the month, & the collective soon realized; that while summer is thankfully still here – it will not last forever. Well dang. “How can it be August 1st already?!” Can we all just agree not to waste much more time thinking about how quickly these months will soon past, but rather live the days that are left – fill them with light, love and of course, pudding (seriously, this exists)! So this weekend I’m making a deal with the self to head back to the water,  read up on my latest book pick, wind down with a few friends, and clean a much too neglected BK nook called my apartment. Tons to read through before we let on…!

5. Email your friends and family. No one will know to recommend you if they don’t know what you’re looking and/or available for. (You know how your mom just assumes you know exactly what she wants all the time, but she gives you no verbal indication? Ya, you are doing the exact same thing if you don’t TELL PEOPLE what you do and what you are looking for.) Email your family and friends simply letting them know the services you offer and what type of clients they can recommend to you. Also, provide them a link to your website. They love you, they want to help you.

You Should Meet: Designer Sofia Berger

sofiaberger

I was completely blow away by the redesign efforts of Sofia Berger’s DIY home. Recently featured as a home tour on Apartment Therapy, Sofia’s digs are in the spacious dwellings of Bed Stuy Brooklyn.  Her style? “Traditional meets classic modern with vintage and rustic elements.”   There’s so much more to oggle and fawn over by clicking here. & to witness the before pics, click on over to her Facebook Page.
