PJ’ism counts for Something…

October 18th, 2010 at 8:49 pm.

Interesting Guest Post over at BGLH.com today exploring the topic of PJism, what are the benefits, drawbacks & implications on the natural hair ‘scene.’ I’ll always love the dialogue that sparks within the natural hair community & I think disagreeing on certain matters helps to keep the flow current, yet my overall hope is to squash the divide that often surfaces when we choose to explore issues that are often non-relevant as a whole. I’ve long grown tired of defending any & all issues concerning my hair, my decision to go natural and wear my hair the way I choose, what I put in it, how much I spend etc., and continuing to place judgment on matters of ill relevance leads no where…my opinion.

…and on that note!

Products Used:

  • Pre-Poo: Curly Sexy Hair Moisturizing Conditioner
  • Scalp Cleanse: Neem Clay Mask + Mixed w/Avocado Oil
  • Cleanse: Carol’s Daughter Curl Perfecting Shampoo + Darcy’s Botanicals Daily Cleansing Cream
  • Deep Condition: Darcy’s Botanicals Deep Conditioning Mask
  • Style: Beautiful Curls Leave-in Conditioner + Darcy’s Botanicals Avocado & Plum Twisting Cream

I started early in order to finish early this week because the hair has been taking much longer to dry in light of the recent drop in temperatures. Also, I’m on a program to remedy a nasty scalp situation so a Neem Clay Mask was called up. Applied the mask in small sections throughout the scalp, left in under a plastic cap for 15-20 min and followed up with a lukewarm rinse & cleanse using the Curl Perfecting Shampoo. Took a bit of a time to wash all the clay from the scalp but managed well & cleansed the hair with Darcy’s Cleansing Cream to leave hair soft & manageable prior to deep conditioning.

Still trying out new combos with my new favorite leave-in conditioner from the Beautiful Curls line, and pairing off with Darcy’s Twisting creams has given some great results! *Definite reviews to come

First day hair’s hardly ever as big as I would like, but the journey to 7-day hair will be just as fun, yes. I did notice a significant improvement on the scalp once hair was 100% dry this morning, so will definitely try the Neem Clay mask again. I’d long run out of my old favorite remedy, Apple Cider Vinegar & will have to stock up for the winter – this is by far my favorite to mix in with many of the clay powders I use for my scalp.

Had a pleasant surprise this morning on the way to work. Waiting for the train on the platform, trying desperately to camouflage and bat away a watery eye situation due to allergies…a young woman  stands next to me and says, “ I don’t want to come across as weird or anything, but I think your hair is beautiful...” *Whaaaat?! *I was humbled, shy and embarrassed that my allergies were taking shine…but it was a sweet moment…and not because of the compliment itself, but because we were both able to offer each other a mental pat on the back, a sense of assurance & respect that’s not often thrown our way. I LIVE for those moments…truly. Granted, it was a wee bit early in the morning, and the veil of Monday Morning was weighing heavy…I appreciated her courage to tell a stranger something that ultimately made her morning…my hope is to pass along the favor someday.

Do you retwist every night or just sleep with a bonnet? I love your hair!

thank you:). I try to twist each night, not small twists, but large enough to hold. If I’m too tired I put the hair in two loose pony puffs and sleep w/a satin bonnet (and re-moisturize, seal if necessary.) Satin bonnet is ALWAYS by my bedside, lol

I know this is a bit of an old post, but do you think you could do an article on your blog about how to approach another natural to give them a compliment. It might seem like an odd topic, but I always wondered about how to do so without coming off creepy/weird (I probably don’t seem creepy/weird but you never know). I know how I’d like someone to approach me, but i can’t say that it’s the same for everyone. :- )
