Brown Sugar & Honey Scalp Scrub

October 18th, 2010 at 10:26 am.

Here’s a quick scrub I threw together in light of a few early scalp irritations a few weeks ago. I’ve mentioned on here before my many ups and downs with my scalp, and while I often feel the ‘situation’ is under control, I still practice diligence to help keep it that way. It may not seem so, but in many ways issues with my scalp have taken far more precedence compared to the health and look of my hair. Is this fair…? Don’t know, but it’s worked for me. I’ve found that achieving a healthy balance with my scalp enables my hair to flourish and grow…so win win.

Brown Sugar & Honey Scalp Scrub:

  • Avocado Oil
  • Raw Honey
  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Brown Sugar (exfoliates to rid flakes, debris)
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil (anti-inflammatory properties)

Many of the supplies I have on hand in some capacity aid in reducing dandruff, calming the case of the itchies, psoriasis, eczema and contain several other antibacterial properties. Measurements were not precise when mixing, but desired results were a medium paste that could be easily applied to scalp. Essential oils were used sparingly (no more than a cap-full).

I’m a huge fan of easy application when it comes to matters of the scalp, primarily to avoid messy situations but mainly to effectively target certain areas of my scalp that I know are more prone to irritations. *optional* To make the paste a tad smoother I added a non-sulfate moisturizing shampoo (no more than a few tablespoons). Final result was an easy to pour & apply mix using an  applicator bottle.

A moisturizing conditioner could substitute for the non-sulfate shampoo to aid in application, using either can also help when time to rinse the mixture out of your hair. Applying the mix to scalp in sections works best & leaves less of a mess, & to be honest this is the best way to deal with scalp irritations. The tea tree in the mix gives the scalp a great tingle which can be either soothing or irritating depending on your preference. I like it, so I leave the scrub on the scalp for five minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.

Colder temps are in full swing, which means I’ll be using more scalp scrubs and remedies, some past goodies and others I’ve been anxious to try. *I should point out that scalp scrubs & ‘things of that nature’ can benefit anyone, regardless of any related ailments. Bottom line, it just feels good to stimulate the scalp and get those follicles in working order, promoting a healthy scalp should be on everyone’s healthy hair radar.

I’ve gotten a few e-mails asking about my seborrheic dermatitis, (often referred to as eczema of the scalp) and I’ll continue to update with what I periodically use to combat the symptoms, in the meantime… if you’ve had success with scalp scrubs or have recently played mixtress, would love to hear your recipes or treatments!

hi Cynthia, not at all! in fact, the result of the scrub is more of a smooth paste when you blend it w/a liquid base (whether it’s honey, a shampoo etc.) sugar is something that melts fairly well when coming in contact with the skin especially when mixed w/oils and applied to the scalp. the residue left behind is easily rinsed off if you use a good cleansing poo or conditioner;)
