Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque

Having easy access to some of the best products to help quench and nourish naturally curly hair is steadily becoming a reality, and I couldn’t be any happier! Earlier this year flocks of kinky curly masses headed out to Target for the official launch of several new additions to their beauty care aisle, one prominent name being the Shea Moisture line of stylers, conditioners & shampoos. I can’t front on not feeling just a twang of excitement after seeing the endcaps full of products geared SPECIFICALLY for naturally curly hair. I happily joined the small group of ladies gathered around the displays, scanning the ingredient lists and asking each other questions. It really was a lesson on what has long been missing in the hair industry as well as a welcome sigh of relief at seeing something finally started, and the anticipation of seeing even more curly haired lines introduced to the mainstream markets.

While the Shea Moisture line does carry a long list of products, I managed to keep the pennies in check and walk away with just the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. If I’m at a Tarjay on a weekend there are only two things I need – 1 is toilet tissue, and the other is a cheap effective conditioner in place of some of my online favorites.  I used the masque to deep condition while the hair was in dire need of a trim, but still had high hopes.

I applied to wet hair after pre-pooing and shampooing the scalp, and choose to detangle with a wide tooth comb as opposed to the Denman brush to help prevent more snarls and tangles on my remaining damaged ends. The slip of the conditioner did make detangling easy, and while my hair did drink in most of the 12 oz jar, it didn’t take me longer than usual to get the job done.

Ingredients:

deionized water, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), argan oil, cetyl esters, sea kelp extract, panthenol (vitamin b-5), ammonium salt, essential oil blend, avocado oil, lonicera caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower and lonicera japonica (japanese honeysuckle) flower extract, tocopherol (vitamin e), hyssopus officinalis extract, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf and equisetum arvense extract, soybean oil, daucus carota sativa (carrot) seed oil.

Going by the ingredient list, you really can’t go wrong – all natural and filled with moisturizing goodness, the hair was noticeably softer and smooth after an hour and a half of sitting under a conditioning cap. I’m almost certain if I used heat to help the condish penetrate my strands I would’ve had more effective results, but lacked time. I love a good deep conditioner that can help set-up the styling process, and the Shea Moisture masque worked well in doing so – applying my normal leave-in under my usual styler was easy and did not leave me reaching for more product to help moisturize.

What I liked about the product was the easily application, and the current easy access we all have when looking for a cost effective deep treatment. While the smell was a bit overpowering (think sweet cake batter), it did dissipate after applying my regular leave-in conditioner & styler.  For $9, I would purchase again, but only if my current stash was looking a bit grave. With my thick coarse hair, the deep treatment worked well, but because it does come off a bit runny-not necessarily thick- I was more than a little heavy handed when applying. If you’ve tried the Shea Moisture Masque, I’d love to hear your thoughts! If you happen to be in your local Target and stumble on the new lines now offered, I’d suggest giving the Masque a try if your tresses are damaged, thirsty or just need a little TLC.

I have tried the deep conditioner and the reconstructive elixir. I like both. Even though my sister thinks that the elixir has a musky smell, i still like it. I like to spray it on my twist before i let them out and on my scalp.

They also have a black soap body wash. I love that too.

OH! Black soap body wash – haven’t seen it yet, but will hunt down! I use black soap a lot, especially during the Summer.

I have both the shampoo and the curl & style milk, and I’m pretty pleased with both of them. I like the smell, and my hair just soaks it up like a sponge. I’ll have to try the black soap body wash (I’m learning to make my own black soap.)

Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque is my fave leave-in conditioner of all time. It leaves my hair soft, fluffy and fragrant. It’s a definite staple. :)

I shampoo my hair, towel dry then put Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque on my hair and cover with a plastic cap. Leave it on for 30 min. then rinse it out. Let my hair dry naturally then put more on as a leave in conditioner. Leaves my hair soft & smelling soooo good.

as a leave in? I’ve heard of a few ladies trying this…I’ve only used as a DC with good results, but this method is sounding more interesting!

I use the Shea Moisture DC and I love the way it makes my hair feel. I was one of the lucky ones that snagged these products during Walgreens BOGO sale.
I apply DC and than put on a cap for about 30-45 minutes (no heat, but I have been meaning to try that method). I rinse out and apply my leave-in conditioner. I have tried to use as a leave in, but that’s a NO GO for my hair. It makes my hair feel a bit heavy and although the smell is plesant, it seems overpowering for ME when not washed out. It is a product that I love and will keep in my hair regimen. So ladies if you haven’t tried this line yet, give it a whirl! I don’t think you will be disappointed.
